When I was just a boy I joined the Boy Scouts. I went to Shiele Scout Reservation in Lenoir, NC. I'm 65 now and that was one of the greatest experiences of my entire life. I have very vivid memories of the bunk houses with screen wire on the sides, the chow hall, the lake with a "crib" for non-swimmers, and all of the games we played. This was one of the neatest things I ever did. I would pay just to relive it one more time!

I too enjoyed the summers that I went to scout camp at Schiele Reservation. I also remember the bunk houses, the "dining room" where we ate our meals and the lake. I also remember the walking paths through the woods and all of the crafts available at the camp "store". One summer I went to camp with a finite amount of spending money for the week. I got hooked on tying lanyards and stitching moccasins. Other boys at the camp began coming to me and offering to pay me to tie them a lanyard or stitch them a pair of moccasins. By the end of the week when it was time to go home, I was leaving with more money than I had brought with me! But I enjoyed every minute of it! Ahh, memories!!

Before it became Schiele Scout Reservation, it was know as Piedmont Boy Scout Camp. I went there the summer of 1955 or 56--kinda far back to remember--with Troop 5 from Kings Mountain. (We moved to Wake Forest in Fall of 1956, where I joined Troop 5 of the Occoneechee Council.) Piedmont Camp was a great experience. Swimming and canoeing, crafts and the evening performance with a Native American theme are tucked vividly into my mind, even these many years later.
